I don't think the show can 'ignore' ratings completely though. That might have (ultimately) worked for season 1 but can Fox rely on the consistency of fan DVD/media purchases? Especially when another show might do better in ratings AND bring in funds from the fanbase. You have a pointthough, the show could carve out a niche - it looks like that's the direction the show is headed - without as much expectation or pressure as it had last season. Ironically, I do think the show was better off in the Friday slot than the Monday. :) I guess it is possible – as you point out there has to be that healthy balance. If this Season proved anything then it was that the combination of pricetag and timeslot was good enough for Fox to order a second season. If Dollhouse continues to be so cheap (and why shouldn't it?)
