Dollhouse Round-Up – Glau, UK, Lachman, Needs!

"Hey Echo, let's play human statues!"

Hello all,

Not a lot going on in the world of Dollhouse at the moment. One tidbit that did catch my eye was the rumour-possibility-speculation that Summer Glau would soon be getting her imprint-on by joining Dollhouse, now that Terminator has been..terminated. Here’s what Whedon had to say on the matter:

“If anybody thinks [bringing Summer on to Dollhouse] hasn’t occurred to me already then they have not met me,” he said. “I mentioned it to her before [Sarah Connor] was canceled. I was like, ‘You know, we should get you in the house’. But first we have to come up with something that works.”

I think Glau would be a great addition to the cast for obvious (and not so obvious) reasons, although I can see why there would be hesitancy to cast her as an Active – she might be in danger of getting typecast.

Elsewhere Buddy TV give us “reasons to be optimistic about Dollhouse Season 2”. Should I be worried that they only list two reasons? One of those reasons being the suggestion that it’s a good idea to let Whedon make as many episodes as he wants? No, no, no! Whedon is talented but  there’s no way he can distance himself from those first 7 (yes, SEVEN) poor episodes of the season. As maligned as Fox are, it’s their job to oversee and course-correct where necessary. Last season the balance may have been off, but that’s no reason to let Whedon run riot just because 2 million people watched his show and promised to buy DVD’s. Like I’ve said before, Whedon has ideas and concepts that need to be shared, but outside of his fan-base Dollhouse didn’t do much damage. He needs guidance if the show is to have scope and range.

You may have heard that Dollhouse has been picked up in the UK. The Guardian‘s Anna Pickard reviews episode 2 “Target” and in doing so gives me horrific flashbacks of roving rivers, cabin’s in woods and a storyline that made little sense. She does make some interesting observations however:

The realisation that Eliza Dushku is at her most attractive while looking sideways. Any engagement where she is compelled to take on the personality of a crab, therefore, will be a winner for her.

Echo did look sideways quite a bit in that episode, if memory severs or serves, one of the two.

Apparently Dollhouse premieres in Australia next month. Dichen Lachman talks to smh.com about her “doll of a role”. Say’s Lachman:

“Sierra has had her power taken away and one of the fun things is that Joss [Whedon] has said he’s looking forward to her getting her power back,”

There does seem to be a lot of that in Dollhouse – exploring the meek in their powerlessness. I do think it would be interesting to one day explore someone with power having that taken away from them, before re-finding it in a way they never expected to. Someone like Adelle, perhaps?

And that’s about it, like I said not much going on in DH-land. I did have a look for the trailer of the next episode I’ll be watching – 1.08 “Needs”:

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y53UDoHw1FE

Despite the cheese it actually looks pretty good – well, as good as ANY trailer crammed with all the bestest bits and “watch this episode, it’ll be good, we promise!” voice-overs. That said, I’m most intrigued by the title – “NEEDS”. Considering this is the “awakening” episode, that title has taken on a new level of importance. I really hope this one delivers..I kinda need it to. Yikes.

Summer Glau could really bring over a lot of bitter TSCC fans. It’d be a good move if they got her on the show.

To be honest, I thought Needs was a decent episode. Its better than episode 6, I just hate the direction they took “Caroline” in when she makes certain decisions on the episode.

I’ve noticed that some of the more outspoken T:SCC fans have a some issues with DH. Although it seems to be a mutual feeling.

That’s good to hear! Episode 6 was good, but I felt the pre and post-hype was over exaggerated. I’ll keep an eye out for the Caroline’s motivations.

Hopefyully I’ll get to watch the episode this week, if I can find it on-line.

Needs should still be on Fox.com and Hulu.

Thanks Adam – I forgot that they have episode 8 onwards in their libraries.

No problem. While I seem to be enjoying the show more than you do, I really like to read your take on each episode. So hurry up and watch!
