Mother Jones have a “MoJo” interview with Joss Whedon. The interview isn’t Dollhouse-specific by any means, but it’s worth a gander. Here’s an extract (audio link at end of post):. 

Mother Jones: How has writing for television been different from writing for film?

Joss Whedon: I respect television in a way that some people who came out of film might not. Some people might take this as stereotyping, but I describe television as feminine and movies as masculine, in the sense that television wants to examine a problem from all sides and talk about it for a long time, and movies just want to hit the climax and then maybe have a smoke. I respect the rules of TV, the rules of keeping things commercial and interesting and pop-y and fun.

MJ: Some examples of those rules?

JW: My cast was not hideous to look upon. I made every act break at an exciting time that would make you want to come back after you examined these products that we used to examine before TiVo. And I tried to make money for the people that I work with, like Hyman Roth.

MJ: When you wrote Buffy, were you actively thinking, “I’m going to make an empowered feminist icon,” or were you just intuitively telling the story you wanted to tell? Or are they the same?

JW: It’s both, and they’re not the same. Because “intuitively” means, “This is what turns me on, this is what I need to see, this is my obsession.” I’ve seen a lot of movies [written] by guys who set out to [create a feminist icon] and didn’t feel it. Look at A League of Their Own. All of the good lines are Tom Hanks’. Those guys are really fabulous writers, but it’s not enough to say, “This should be done.” You have to need to do it. The way Guillermo del Toro [Pan's Labyrinth] needs to make movies about insects—that man cares more about insects than anyone I know. He clearly is obsessed. And obsession is beautiful. It’s what makes art.

MJ: You create interesting heroes, as well as interesting villains. In Angel, you have the good guy fighting against an evil law firm, Wolfram and Hart. In Firefly, you have Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a defeated rebel soldier, battling the victorious planetary Alliance.

JW: Evil doesn’t come in saying, [breathes heavily, Darth Vader-style], “It’s your faaather.” Generally speaking, it’s a lot more nebulous. In fact, it usually isn’t evil so much as it is a lot of people overthinking things until they find themselves caught in an untenable situation.

MJ: In the second-to-last season of Angel, the hero actually takes a job with Wolfram and Hart, and eventually he just loses it and brings down the house.

JW: Well, you know, I’m sure I’m going to bring down News Corp with Dollhouse. Hmmm—maybe you shouldn’t quote that. I’m not a huge fan of Mr. Murdoch’s politics, God knows, or his methods. But I’ve been at Fox on and off for practically the whole of my career. Am I the biggest hypocrite in the world for taking their money? Am I doing any good? Or am I working for Wolfram and Hart? I feel at the end of the day, I’m doing some good. They’re letting me tell my stories. We’ll see if the stories on Dollhouse actually come out the way I plan them to.

The above promotional photo illustrates that Echo’s mind-wiping chair comes equipped with hand, neck and head ‘pads’, which light up an ice blue color during the mind-wiping process (inset).

I thought she got her mind wiped, not a manicure and massage? In all seriousness though, these pads are probably part of the muscle memory erasing process.

Which raises another point. We know that the show will explore Echo’s struggle to remember her own pre-Dollhouse past, but I also think it would be clever if she also retained some of the subsequent personalities and skills (muscle memory) she’s since been imprinted with. With that in mind, the show could focus on ‘Who Have I Been?’ as well as ‘Who Am I?’. I’d find it interesting to discover whether any particular traits from previous imprints begin to surface. Perhaps there will be a collection of traits that begin to recur, leaving us to wonder why particular imprinted personalities are retained over others? Is it about memory and repetition, or a conscious choice and the desire to act in a certain way?

DOLLHOUSE: Eliza Dushku as Echo. DOLLHOUSE focuses on a secret organization that employs “Actives” — a group of operatives who have their memories and personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with new ones, allowing them to take on various missions for hire. The Actives don’t just act like new people, they become new people, yet they are never aware they are pawns in someone else’s game in DOLLHOUSE.

This new description seems more succinct than the original one (if memory serves) - something FOX seems to hope the show will be.

Lisa Lapira (NCIS, Dexter) has revealed in a recent interview with Buddy TV that she will be a recurring character in Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse”:

You also shot a guest starring appearance on Dollhouse?Yes, that’s another secret thing. I’m recurring.

Oh, you’re recurring in Dollhouse?

Yes, as if this conversation I was.

On the TCA Press Tour, Joss and Eliza took us on a tour of that set.

Oh my god, you tell me what did you think of that set?

It was huge, especially that giant room where everybody hangs out.

Doesn’t it look functional? It actually is functional. I asked Eliza if she worked out on those machines there, or if people took naps in the beautiful Zen-like garden palace they have there. The bigness of it, for me it was so overwhelming, and also really calming. The theme is Zen and relaxing, and there’s so much yoga so that these dolls are perfect. When I walked in I was like wow, feng shui really works, because I feel really good.

You’ve got the big ratings hit with NCIS, you’ve got the critical acclaim with Dexter, and now you’ve got the Joss Whedon show, which has every TV nerd in the world excited.

I’ve been pretty lucky. This has been a good year in that I’ve been able to touch a lot of things. Also the action, fast cars-type deal as a young FBI agent in Fast and Furious. I’ve gotten to touch all the genres. Dollhouse is kind of sci-fi. Joss Whedon is kind of his own thing. What’s the term for that?

It’s just Whedonesque. You have Buffy, Angel, Firefly, it’s all his own world.

Yeah, it’s Joss’ world, we just live in it.

Dollhouse? It has one of the most intriguing concepts I’ve ever come across, right off the bat. In a sea of “ordinary person gets brainchip/spy computer in brain/mutant powers/introduced to a mad scientist” shows, Dollhouse instantly stands out.

It’s the story of Echo (Eliza Duskhu), who’s basically the property of the eponymous Dollhouse. For a fee, you can have Echo imprinted with any personality, any memories, any skills, you require. (And she does pro bono work sometimes.) But Echo, who’s supposed to be a blank slate, is starting to gain self-awareness, and remember who she really is. She has to fight for her identity, but the Dollhouse stands ready to destroy her if she shows any signs of self-awareness.

Yes, that’s a high-concept premise, and it’s hard to make it work as a weekly TV show. Luckily — see above — Joss Whedon’s strong suit is execution. He’s actually much better at making things work than he is at coming up with intriguing concepts in the first place.

Yes, I remember now! I don’t think this is a case of burying ones head in the sand, everyone knows the show has had problems, but until the show airs, lets hold on to the huge potential in the premise. Sure, the idea may have been cooked up in 5 minutes over pizza, but some people have their best ideas on the toilet. The Dollhouse premise is far from being in the gutter, as some people would have us believe.

Firefly passed that test with flying Adam Baldwins, and so will Dollhouse. (Without the Baldwin part.) Are you a Conservative who believes in rugged individualism? Dollhouse is about someone fighting for her individuality, who can’t be suppressed or destroyed by oppressive forces. Hate our orgiastic, hedonistic society, that turns people into pieces of meat? Dollhouse is right there with you. Do you think corporations are the devil, with better shoes? Dollhouse is about an evil corporation. Do you fear technology? Come on in. Etc. etc.

I think this is why both “Fringe” and “Dollhouse” caught my attention - both question the application of technology at a poignent time in our evolution. Dollhouse looks set to explore the role technology can have in protecting and destroying the self, and might pose questions like: Is it better to forget? Is it important to have a choice? Is there any going back? Can you ever really be yourself all of the time? Can you fight the system? Can you give into yourself? What is the soul? ..are we a collection of our memories and experiences, or does something else define us? Dollhouse is ‘out there’, but the underlying concept might well be closer to home than we think, if it’s given the chance to be itself.
