Is This Really The Breast Approach? More Dollhouse Promo Pix

by admin on January 11, 2009 · 15 comments

I’m a healthy young man who can appreciate the female body, hell, it’s what I live for. But when something is shoved in my face and leaves little to the imagination, well, it kinda takes the shine off things. As is the case with these two Dollhouse promo pix of Eliza Dushku practically naked. Click to make big (erm, so to speak):

I’m sorry, has it really come to this, the show hasn’t even started yet and we’ve already hit last base? There’s nothing *wrong* with this photo per se, if they were for some random show I wouldn’t mind so much because I wouldn’t care so much (about the show). I just think that the first photo gives the wrong image for the DH, but then perhaps I’ve got the wrong show? I’m sure there are those who will take one look and instantly proclaim them as being works of “art”. Pfft. It’s Eliza Dushku posing semi-naked, art, is so much more than lying in a freezing pool of water with little or no clothes.

Whilst the above photo is more tasteful, my concern is that the marketing dept. have run out of ideas and so they’re using the tried and tested “sex sells” angle. It’s weak, and it validates my earlier observations. I used to think that this show was about more than Eliza Dusku getting her clothes off, I really did. It’s good to incorporate sex into a show, but this is another example of DH being too quick outta the gate (so to speak).

I hope Feb 13 comes along soon, because at this rate I’m losing the will to blog about Dollhouse with “Fringe” and “Lost” on the horizon. Don’t get me wrong, I support the show, but Echo has suddenly lost all mystery. If they need sex to sell this show then that is cause for concern.

Truthfully, in case you couldn’t tell, It’s really not that serious, and in another context I would applaud the bravado, but this just seems like trying too hard..or rather, being too easy.

*I should add, that I’m quite surprised Fox have sanctioned these – assuming they’re official, that is. The photo with Dushku’s nipples on display (lol, did I just say that?) appear to be from this shoot (bottom photo) taken a few months back, whilst the one where she’s lying on her stomach looks like a completely new set. So yeah, looks official.

By the way, if you want to see how you can do a sexy, yet classy, photo-shoot, check these out (especially if you’re a “Fringe” or Anna Torv fan). As an aside, isn’t it funny how the same network can get it so right with one show, but make such a mess of another? Ah, the wonders of life..

There’s nothing wrong with the photos in my opinion. Eliza looks beautiful. And so what she’s showing a litte skin? How many celebs haven’t done that before?
Come on! She dosen’t even showing her “private stuff” if you know what I mean. And I seriously doubt that the idea of the photos was “sex sells”. The photos or very tasteful.

I agree Lisa, there’s nothing wrong with them per se. But in my opinion it has nothing to do with whether or not Dushku looks “beautiful” – she’s good looking plenty with her clothes on, so that’s irrelevant. Nor is it about what other “celebs” have done. My point is that I think this presents the wrong image for a show that I thought was about more than a chick getting her clothes off. I mean, does Dollhouse really need to get Dushku naked in order to get people to watch the show? Is that how desperate they are? Because that’s what that photo says to me. It just seems like a cheap stunt, and I thought DH was above all that – obviously I was wrong 🙁

I feel that they’ve dumbed-down the show in one swoop. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think that this was a show with depth as shallow as the water that Dushku is lying in (in the photo). It’s just the wrong message. But then sex sells and they’ve sold out, imo.

I could be wrong Lisa (and I respect your opinion) but I see this as an error of judgement from the promotional peeps.

That said, it’s not all that serious in the grand scheme of things. I’m just disappointed that they caved in.

I totally agree with you Roco. I am a HUGE Eliza fan and a HUGE supporter of Dollhouse, and I think those photos are super beautiful and hot, but I felt exactly the same as you very well described when I saw the photos. I felt that it was a desperate measure and gives the impression that the show is very shallow when in fact it is incredibly deep, I even felt kinda coy and uncomfortable to post them elsewhere. Maybe they thought that a naked Echo symbolizes her being blank and empty of memories. But doesn’t work for me. I’m not buying it. Naked = Sex, not Innocence. And why her with a gun in water still doesn’t tell me anything about the show as I know it. Maybe I got the wrong idea? Anyhow, I did make a couple of fan-ad videos on youtube a month ago to explain the essence and premise of the show, someone please tell me if I was wrong. Here’s the link to the video:
And this one about Innocence:

I feel you Elizologist, at one stage I questioned whether I should even post the photo where she’s lying in the water, or just provide a link to it.

I’d like to think that too – they may have gone with the notion that a naked Echo is the perfect representation of a ‘tabula rasa’-type blank slate. But like yourself, I think they decided to go with the tried and trusted ‘sell the show off the back of Dushku’s hotness’ angle, which I think will only work up to a point.

As you mentioned, I think this is a misrepresentation of what I thought (and still hope) was a brilliantly deep and thought provoking show. Naked promotions doesn’t mean that it wont or can’t become that, but it just doesn’t feel right.

By the way, I LOVE your videos, both of them! They capture (what I believe to be) the essense of Dollhouse far better than that promo pic, imo. Keep up the good work!

Cool, thank you! I’m glad you liked them. I will be making some more before Dollhouse airs.

That’s great, I hope to see them online. Thanks again for sharing!

I recently found this blog post via random Google searches for dollhouse spoilers haha. I felt the need to post because I think you wrote my exact thoughts, Roco.

It’s really sad that they seem to be so desperate in wanting the show to succeed that they felt the need to resort to this type of marketing. Those pics *ARE* hot, but I mean… I’m just scared of what the show will become if they’re already resorting to sexing up their promos.

It’ll just alienate a lot of people… sort of like what happened with me and Firefly. Even though I’m a huge fan of Whedon, I think Firefly’s marketing was all wrong. I couldn’t even bear to watch the 1st episode because there were like hints of what seemed to be explicit sex scenes, etc. in the FOX promos, which really turned me off. I mean, I don’t want to watch a show like that and have my sisters or parents walk in. I admit I watched all of Firefly recently and just realized what a great show I missed out on. It wasn’t like the weird sci-fi soft core porn that I thought it was. I blame the poor marketing.

I’m still looking forward to Feb 13 anyway though. I hope they don’t overdo the whole “Eliza Dushku is extremely hot with her clothes off” angle.

Hi Whedon Fan,

I agree, I think that they have mis-marketed the show on occasions. That photo was so unnecessary. As you say, it felt like a knee-jerk response to the doom and gloom that surrounded the show.

It’s done and dusted now, and I’m sure that they had the best intentions. Fox have been so very creative with “Fringe”, hopefully some of that good stuff can rub off in promoting this show!

That said, “Dollhouse” has so much potential and an exciting ensemble, hopefully, along with good scripting and production values, this will be the ‘hook’.

I agree that all this skin is a cheap stunt, an obvious attempt to lure the coveted young male demographic to a show that seems to be clearly all about powerful (and thus perhaps intimidating) women.

But I don’t agree that we can fault Joss or Dollhouse’s creative team for this–FOX markets the show, not Joss or Eliza. In fact, when they DO talk about the show (such as in yesterday’s LA Times article), they paint a very different picture than Eliza in a cold, wet t-shirt.

I gotta say, not revealing enough! Come on, Playboy is glamorous these days. Porn is mainstream. Let’s see more! Show off that amazing body, Eliza!

Tom April 26, 2009 at 8:40 am

I agree, no where near revealing enough! Eliza has(besides a great acting talent)an incredible body, and should definitely show it off more!

alpha April 27, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Sci-fi and comic book adaptations have always been shameless about dressing up their female stars.

Anna Torv of Fringe isn’t as classic a beauty as Eliza, but she’s realer and kinda hotter, IMHO. The hallucinatory girl-on-girl with the stripper in last week’s episode blew away anything they’ve done with Eliza.

Beta Dude January 30, 2010 at 10:24 pm

Are you guys kidding me with the naked thing and all that la-tee-dah BS about bringing the show to a LEVEL?

This ain’t Shakespeare boys. Geeish.

Echo is a high price hooker MOST of the time.
Some naked pics are very appropriate.

Someone in the show even said she bedded most of the city.
Duh!!! The sex thing is (was should get back to it) a major them of the show. A few sexy pictures were LACKING.

I think i'll start watching it
